Santorum Campaign ‘Girding’ Their Loins For Pennsylvania Primary

ABC News’ Michael Falcone reports:

A top adviser for Rick Santorum said Wednesday morning that after Mitt Romney’s three-primary sweep Tuesday night, the Santorum campaign is “girding our loins” for the April 24 Pennsylvania primary.

Despite growing calls for Santorum to exit the race, the adviser said the former Pennsylvania senator huddled with his senior staff in Mars, Pa. Tuesday night where he held his election night event replica watches, and began to plot a three-week course for a win in the state he represented in Congress from 1991 to 2007.

Santorum starts with a three-city tour of Pennsylvania today but will have no public events over the Easter weekend. However, staff said that does not mean he’s taking the days “off.” He intends to use the time to sketch out his strategy for keeping Romney at bay in a state where one recent poll, taken before last night’s primaries, shows Santorum holding on to a 6 percentage point lead over the former Massachusetts governor.

The adviser said part of the strategy will be to make the weeks between now and the April 24 primary a family affair. Santorum’s wife, Karen, and the couple’s oldest daughter Elizabeth, who turns 21 on Monday, plan to launch their own barnstorming tour of the state starting next week.

The mother-daughter campaign swing, playfully — but not officially — dubbed “The Better-Half Tour,” was Karen’s idea, according to an aide.

Though Romney did not mention any of his opponents in his victory speech in Milwaukee last night, Santorum placed a call to Romney to congratulate him on wins in Wisconsin, Maryland and the District of Columbia. The two candidates were, indeed, able to connect.

Santorum’s team is anticipating an onslaught from the Romney campaign in Pennsylvania — television ads replica watches, robo-calls, and a heavy campaign schedule. But they insist that dropping out before the Keystone State primary is not an option.

Santorum has already set the bar for himself: “We have to win Pennsylvania replica watches,” he said last Sunday.

Why Dying Is Different for Doctors

May 17th, 2012 by admin

A few months ago my 95-year-old mother reached a point where we had no choice but to move her to a nursing home. It took a few weeks for her to adjust to her new environment. Still, she calmly notes, “I have lived too long and I just want to go to sleep and not wake up.” I do not doubt her honesty. She seems to have accepted the transition to her final “home,” but she wishes that her death would be painless and sudden.

Last fall, my wife almost died. While she has recovered, the experience of “near-death” has extinguished her fear of dying. She tells me that had she not awakened from her coma, she would not have known any difference. She points out that there was nothing unpleasant about the experience. She wants to see our grandchildren grow older and plant more flowers in her garden, but her voice reveals no anxiety when she speaks about her inevitable death.

The attitudes of these two very different women in my life make me realize that I need to examine my attitude toward my own mortality. If they are able to accept death so easily, why do so many people fear death?

Physicians and Death

I met my cadaver the first week of medical school. This is an indelible memory for most physicians. Despite requisite lectures regarding death and respect, the initial encounter may be met with gallows humor — a sign of everyone’s anxiety. Other than gazing on my grandmother in her casket, I had never laid eyes on, much less touched, a dead human being, but I now found myself surrounded by 50 of them in the anatomy lab. This man who had donated his body to science was a tall, large-boned, African-American gentleman whose skin had yellowed slightly and seemed unnaturally wrinkled the result of the gallons of preservatives that a lab technician had pumped into his body. I never knew him when he was alive. So, I realize now that I felt somewhat disconnected from this man, his death, and the concept of my own death.

As medical students, we never cared for an individual for any length of time — we just rotated from one service to the next. My first real experience with the death of someone I had come to know occurred during my internship. I distinctly remember Bill, a 22-year-old red-headed, clear-eyed cowboy with metastatic malignant melanoma. I can still clearly recall the layout and details from the room where he died, and how I was overcome with an unfamiliar feeling.

Today, as a neurologist Best Tattoo Inks, I witness people’s deaths. Some are friends and family I have known for years, while others, I have never seen before their gurneys wheel into the emergency room. These experiences have shaped my personal views regarding my own death and how I might prefer to die. Because of our exposure to and understanding of how people die, physicians, at least in my experience, tend to deal with death differently than those outside of the profession.

How do physicians approach their own death? Do they make different decisions for their patients than they make for themselves? In a recent article in The Atlantic, Dr. Ira Byock Tattoo Kits For Sale, a palliative care physician, characterized the American mindset towards death as, “I don’t want to think about [it] … Our cultural tendency is to avoid serious conversations about the end of life.” We fight, scream, and kill each other over the front end of life. We argue vociferously over being pro-life or pro-choice, but we put our collective heads in the sand when it is time to discuss how we want to die. Dr. Byock informs us that the “way Americans die remains a national disgrace.”

Physicians often talk amongst ourselves about how we would like to die, and our decisions are strongly colored by what we have seen. We know all about futile care, misuse of intensive care units, or the prolonged use of chemotherapy and medications that fail to enhance the quality of life. Not only does our society warehouse the dead in cemeteries, but we also warehouse the dying in hospitals and nursing homes.

Many times a grieving family will demand excessive care, and our society defaults to prolonging life, but doctors usually do not choose this for themselves. In my experience, it’s very common for physicians to prescribe more care for a patient than they would for themselves or their family.

Are Physicians Different?

It might seem that physicians, as knowledgeable medical professionals, would want more care than non-physicians. We have access to and education about the latest and greatest therapies. We can find out who is running the latest experimental study and maneuver our way into the test group. But Tattoos Machines Kits, oddly enough, physicians don’t die like the general public — we tend to choose less care. We have seen one too many intensive care units filled with 85-year-olds with what we consider to be no hope of ever returning home. We have seen the horrible side effects of treatment and know that there are things worse than death. Most physicians have had a lengthy discussion with their family, and told them that they do not want any heroic measures.

A recent poll asked physicians to complete the thought, “If I or my family were faced with a terminal illness with a great potential for a terrible course and reasonable options have failed…” The respondents unanimously asked for limited interventions, and to avoid any extraordinary measures that extended life. Physicians’ unique perspective allows them to enter this discussion from a different point.

Not All Physicians Are the Same

A study of 233 physicians in Israel evaluated the “Fear of Personal Death Among Physicians.” It looked at physicians in the specialties of pediatrics, oncology, internal medicine, surgery and psychiatry. Prior studies had found that psychiatrists who were the least frequently exposed to death were the most anxious about their own death, followed by internists (moderate anxiety) and then surgeons, who had the greatest exposure to death (least anxious).

The physicians in Israel did not vary by specialty. Interestingly, though, physicians who had known more close friends and family who had passed expressed less fear and anxiety about dying. In other words, intimate exposure to death affects one’s own perspective. As would be expected, the older physicians were less anxious about dying than the younger ones.

While this study was done in Israel and may not generalize to the United States, religious physicians had a greater personal fear of death than their non-religious colleagues. Other studies have replicated the finding that religious physicians were more frightened of punishment after death — an interesting finding that should lead to a good deal of discussion and debate.

It Is Inevitable

As a group, physicians face end-of-life decisions more openly and have made it clear to their loved ones and peers what they do and do not want done if they become terminally ill or have little chance of a quality survival. Now it is your turn to make those same decisions, talk with your family and write your wishes down on paper. Let us know your feelings and how you plan to deal with this event that none of us can escape.

Learning to Date Again After Divorce

May 17th, 2012 by admin

Here’s a question from one of my readers about dating at midlife after divorce.

Dear Maddisen,
I’m a midlifer, divorced, with 50 percent custody of two great teenagers and in the dating circuit. I’m on a few dating websites, which at times keeps me busy, but most of all keeps me a bit boggled and confused. Why do I get the distinct impression that I’m attracting women who have my mother’s undesirable traits? Any sagely advice?
Thanks, RB

Dear RB,

Great question. I’ll do my best to offer up some sagely and usable advice.

Most likely, it’s your unconscious mind that is attracting women who have traits like your mother. Therefore, the first step is for you to get very conscious about what you do not want and then what you do want. In getting clear like this, you’ll shed light on the formerly unconscious undesired traits and confirm the consciously desired traits, which will directly support you in attracting and selecting the partner who embodies the qualities that align with who you truly are and what you truly desire. This exercise may also help you clarify the life lessons in this area that you are ready to learn and complete.

What Do You NOT Want?

Get clear about the qualities you do not want in your partner, especially the undesirable traits of the parent or caretaker whose qualities were showing up in your dates. RB, in this case, it would be your mother.

Grab a pad or your computer. At the top of the page write, “These are the qualities, traits Tattoo Ink For Sale, and behaviors I do not like or want in myself or my partner. As I write them down, I am releasing these unwanted qualities from myself and from all future partners and relationships, for the highest good of all concerned.”

List all of the qualities you do not desire in yourself and your partner. Take your time Tattoo power supplies, let it roll, and be sure to articulate the parent’s or caretaker’s traits that you dislike.

What Do You WANT?

Get clear about the qualities you do want and desire in your partner.

Grab a pad or your computer. At the top of the page write Tattoo Machine Kits, “These are the qualities, traits, and behaviors I do want in myself and my partner. As I write them down, I am attracting and experiencing these desired qualities in myself and in all my future partners and relationships, for the highest good of all concerned.”

List all of the qualities you do desire in yourself and your partner. Enjoy this list of what you desire to have in your life. Read, picture, feel, enjoy, and embody these qualities.

32 Day Process — Consciously Choosing Your Mate

Take a temporary break from the dating sites. You can go back after you complete the 32-day process. In most cases, you can simply “hide” your profile on the dating site without having to cancel your subscription. I know because I’ve done this process myself!

Read the list of qualities you do want every day for 32 days. Before you read them each day, considering saying, “I am willing to see, accept, and complete all lessons that I’m ready to learn for my highest good and the highest good of all concerned.”

With your list of desired qualities in front of you, feel them, visualize them, and speak them out loud if you like. Make a game of practicing these positive qualities while you’re alone and with others.

Remember, like attracts like.

After you complete the 32-day process, you can re-launch your online dating activities and make your profile visible once again. When you get back on the matchmaking sites, keep your list of desired qualities on hand. Read the qualities before you log on and while you browse on the sites. Make it your goal to be consciously aware of and choosing who you desire to spend time with.

Practice Conscious Living and Loving

And so, RB and all of my readers, use this exercise to practice making conscious decisions about the positive qualities you seek in yourself and others. Stop letting your unconscious rule your life, pick your partners, and cause you unhappiness and suffering. Be a victor and not a victim of your choices and your actions, as you practice and gain mastery at the conscious living and loving that you came here to enjoy.

Your Life Coach,
Maddisen

Slipper could face confidence vote

May 16th, 2012 by admin

Independent MPs have not ruled out voting with the coalition to sack Speaker Peter Slipper when federal parliament resumes next week, potentially triggering another political crisis for the Labor government.

Mr Slipper is facing a federal police investigation into whether he fraudulently misused cab dockets and civil action by staffer James Hunter Ashby involving sexual harassment allegations.

The Speaker plans to make a statement to parliament when it sits on Tuesday afternoon for the budget sessions, before handing over to his deputy, Labor MP Anna Burke, until the legal matters are resolved.

Leader of opposition business Christopher Pyne has not confirmed whether the coalition will move a motion of no confidence or censure in the Speaker.

But Mr Pyne said this week that “technically we could move a no-confidence motion on anybody we wanted to” and added that the coalition would do “whatever is necessary to restore confidence in the parliament and in the government”.

Independent Rob Oakeshott told AAP on Thursday his support for Mr Slipper continuing as Speaker depends on how the parliamentary chair could “command authority” in the house next week.

“I expect him to make a statement and then not see him again until he gets the all-clear,” he said.

Asked what “all-clear” meant Buy Christian Audigier Clothing, Mr Oakeshott said: “A point where the issues of substance are addressed to a point where there is confidence from his peers to continue in a position of privilege amongst his peers.

“It does not necessarily have to be ticked off in a court.

“But the air of uncertainty of who is right and who is wrong must be clarified to a point where his peers have confidence in his ability in command authority in the house.”

The coalition would need 76 votes to suspend parliament's standing orders and bring on a vote against Mr Slipper.

But only a simple majority would be needed if parliament's multi-party selection committee Cheap Bandage dresses, which meets on Tuesday evening, agrees to put the motion on the notice paper for later in the week.

With WA Nationals MP Tony Crook deciding this weekend whether to move from the crossbenches to sit with the coalition, Opposition Leader Tony Abbott could find himself with 72 MPs to Labor's 71, with five independents and one Greens MP.

The coalition would need four extra votes for a successful no confidence vote in Mr Slipper.

Independent MP Andrew Wilkie said he saw no reason why he would support a no confidence motion in Mr Slipper “at this point in time”.

But he added: “I don't know what next week holds. I approach everything on its merits now and I make no promises about the future.”

Mr Slipper has yet to decide whether his official procession – in which the Speaker dons ceremonial garb and walks slowly through the halls of parliament led by the Sergeant-at-Arms bearing the mace – will go ahead on Tuesday before the sitting.

A spokesman said Mr Slipper wanted to consult colleagues on Monday before deciding.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Julia Gillard has acknowledged caucus colleagues are feeling “political pressure” in the wake of the events surrounding Mr Slipper and former Labor MP Craig Thomson.

But, while announcing a landmark review of defence policy, she said her focus was “doing what is right for the nation”.

Official shots of BMW M3 sedan leaked

God bless forums, you have to love them. The occasional flame war aside (who are we to talk?), they’re often the repository of choice material like this, what appears to be the first official images of the BMW M3 sedan scanned from a brochure. The main shot is large enough to appreciate how well the M3 style plays with the proportions of the 3-Series sedan, while the tiny pic gives us a profile comparison between the M3 coupe and sedan. What do you need to know about the M3 sedan that’s different from the M3 coupe. Well, it’s got two extra doors Tattoo Supplies, but aside from that the same 420 HP V8 will be powering the rear wheels, which is all that’s important to us. Any more details will have to wait until BMW officially takes the wraps off of its super sedan Tattoo Supplies, which is expected to happen at an upcoming auto show, hopefully the L.A. Auto Show in mid-November.

Thanks for the tip, Mark!

When the Legitimacy of the Regime Is Lost, You Have To Take Sides With the Egyptian People

May 14th, 2012 by admin

Since taking control of Egypt from President Hosni Mubarak on Feb. 11, the Supreme Military Council has offered only fleeting glimpses of its thinking via posts on its official Facebook page. But in a rare interview White Herve leger sale, two of the council’s 36 members and a third senior general talked to Washington Post senior associate editor Lally Weymouth about the revolution that ended Mubarak’s 30-year reign and the path ahead for Egypt. The generals spoke only on the condition that their names not be published. Excerpts follow:

L.W.: Were the Egyptian armed forces aware the country was moving in a certain direction before the events [of January] took place?

The last 10 years gave indications that something was going to happen. In 2011 Buy BCBG Dresses, we thought we would witness change.

L.W.: It was known that there was a lot of unemployment White Herve leger sale, food prices were high, and then there was Facebook. What are the things we missed as observers from the outside?

It was about the succession of power, Gamal Mubarak, and a lack of social equity—the erosion of a major part of the middle class. The people who were aware of what was happening were the high-level commanders, not necessarily the middle or the junior [soldiers].

The demonstrations started on Jan. 25. We went as armed forces to the streets on Jan. 28. We stayed calm and observing until Feb. 11, when former President Mubarak stepped down. The important consideration we bore in mind is that when the legitimacy of the regime is lost Discount Christian Audigier Clothing, you have to take sides with the Egyptian people.

L.W.: The armed forces could have taken the side of the president. There must have been a point when you had to decide which way to go.

As long as the regime and the people are one unity—the military’s role is to support. [This changes] once we feel there is a crack between these two forces.

L.W.: Were the upper and lower ranks united in what they wanted to do?

Absolutely.

L.W.: There were no old generals whose loyalty to Mubarak remained strong?

At the beginning, we gave the presidential institution the full opportunity to manage events. If it [had been] able to succeed, nothing would have happened. We would have pulled our people back to the barracks. But they were incapable of responding to events. On Feb. 10, there were demonstrations that amounted to millions of people all over the country.

The police and security forces collapsed completely on Jan. 28. [For] 10 days the country was boiling. [It] made us worry that the country was going into utter chaos. With President Mubarak stepping down from the presidency, the Egyptian armed forces were assigned to run the country. … The most sacred mission for the supreme council is to turn over the country to a civilian authority that is democratically and fairly elected.

L.W.: Why did you decide to have parliamentary elections so quickly instead of giving some of the newer parties time to form?

We wanted to give assurances to the Egyptians that the military is not aspiring for power.

L.W.: People say that by holding parliamentary elections in September, you are giving the Muslim Brotherhood an advantage because they are so well-organized.

The Muslim Brotherhood may get a majority in the election. If they come to power Buy BCBG Dresses, they will not be re-elected. [In the past] people only voted for the Muslim Brotherhood to oppose the regime. … We are doing our best to start a democratic process, but for years afterward we will have to make it more mature and stronger.

L.W.: Can I conclude that the army will be playing an important role behind the scenes?

When most revolutions start, the people who start them have both the capability and the vision. But in our case the military has the capability, but the vision and the ideas are derived from the people.

L.W.: That could be a plus or a minus, right?

One dilemma we are facing now is that it is not left to us completely to run the country. We have to respond and to satisfy the aspirations and hopes of the people. The second dilemma is that we cannot find real leadership from the people here who can sit down at the negotiating table and propose their ideas and discuss them and come to compromises.

L.W.: Nobody?

What we are dealing with now is leading ideas, not leading persons. The ideas are proposed on the Internet and Facebook. … If they are accepted by a large number of people, the next day they are on the streets … and ask [us] to respond to it as a demand.

L.W.: How do you cope with something like that?

It is a problem. The ceiling of the demands is endless. We may also say that these ideas are … not deep enough Discount Herve leger strapless, because the young people generating these ideas don’t have enough political experience. I’ll give you an example: We talk about the Rafah border crossing from the political and security point of view and the international commitments we have. We look for Rafah to be open [only] under certain conditions and controls.

The Palestinians say on the Internet that Gaza is completely blocked and the Egyptians have to open the crossing. The next day, it is a public demand from the Egyptians. … This is pressure on us. And, of course, we have to respond.

L.W.: Your foreign minister told me Egypt is opening up to Gaza and sending in whatever they need. … Is it the army that makes the decision?

The power is in the hands of the Supreme Council of the Egyptian Armed Forces. The council is responsible for running the whole country in this transition period. …

There was a demand that all people detained for political or other reasons except criminal reasons be released.

L.W.: Detained during the protests or before them?
